The KC Freedom School Initiative (KCFSI) is a premiere, nonprofit, youth leadership development organization that provides academic and cultural programs that enhance self-esteem, cultural awareness, and youth leadership skills. Currently our program model operates a host of sites, each serving 100 scholars or between the ages of 5-17 years. Our program helps children fall in love with reading, with a unique curriculum designed especially for them that generates positive attitudes toward learning. We utilize over 100 urban college students as instructional leaders and intergenerational mentors charged with providing a FUN, safe, nurturing environment where high expectations of all scholars are consistently expected and modeled. Our literacy and youth leadership development program model utilizes a strengths-based, culturally relevant teaching pedagogy that embraces cultural awareness, civil rights, youth empowerment, family engagement, social action and youth leadership development. The KCFSI experience connects children to their rich history and culture, and expands their world and possibilities. This undertaking is vitally important and serves a greater purpose as part of a global effort to eliminate the disparities commonly experienced by our children, and empowers them with a sense of pride, hope, and expectation of greater things to come. KCFSI is part of a national network that provides summer and after-school enrichment and is currently seeking to expand service delivery to include year-round school-based services.
